The top 10 places to visit at Lake Como

By Vacanze Lago • on September 12, 2014

Lake Como , situated in the Lombardy region, is a top travel destination in Italy all year round.

Lake Como is surrounded by tall, wooded mountains and is blessed with a variety of beautiful landscapes . The shores are dotted with pastures, woods, rough and imposing rocks, picturesque villages overlooking the water and beautiful villas with parks and gardens.

One of the most picturesque places to visit is the city of Como with its winding streets, monuments and fascinating sights that  can be seen comfortably on foot.

Not far from Como is Cernobbio , known all over the world for some of its most popular attractions likeVilla d’Este, a romantic villa overlooking Lake Como.
The pretty village of Laglio is not to be missed, it is a small and quiet town famous since the American actor George Clooney bought a villa here.

On the southern-west branch ogf Lake Como Lecco is certainly a popular destination for a day out. The town is well known being the set of the most famous Italian novel, “I promessi sposi”. There is in fact a tour (Manzonian Itinerary) Wheel you can visit the places that the tradition established as the location of the events of the novel.

Moving north you can stop at the beautiful lakeside town of Varenna , across Bellagio. Here there are two famous villas to be visited, Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi with their beautiful gardens.
On the hillside you can see the Castle of Vezio, an ancient Roman fortress from Wheel you can admire an amazing view of the entire Lake Como.

In front of Varenna is Bellagio , known all over the world and considered the pearl of Lake Como, with its narrow cobbled alleys, lush gardens, historical villas and breathtaking sceneries; a truly unique jewel.
The town extends partly on the coast zone and partly on the slopes of the promontory. Thanks to this particular location there is an extraordinary variety of panoramic views and looking further towards the extreme northern horizon you can see the Alps.

In the centre lake area you can visit Lenno and Tremezzo , part of the Tremezzina, one of the most beautiful part of lake como, with breathtaking vien and  beautiful lakeside villas.

Last but not least is Colico , the first village of the Northern shore and very close to the Swiss boarder. The village has well preserved its military forts (Fort Fuentes and Forte Montecchio) that are certainly worth a visit.

Colico has a beautiful lakefront promenade  and lake front square with its bubbling fountain that is lit up in the evening and many cafes, restaurants and gelaterias.

Hi there
I’ll be visiting Lake Como in August and will be staying in Varenna for 4 nights. Whilst I’ll explore all that Lake Como has to offer I am very interested to go to Stresa on Lake Maggiore and hopefully visit Isola Bella.
Is there a day tour from say Bellagio or Como that will take to Stresa ?
Any feed back would be very grateful.
Regards
Peter

Hi Peter,
You have to take the train to Milano Centrale (there is one more or less every hour from Varenna or Como) and then from MIlano Centrale take another train to Stresa.
Then once you are in Stresa there are cruises and excursions organised by the Navigazione Laghi http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/eng/m_crociere.asp .
For any extra information please feel free to write to us!

Ciao!
I have a similar question… How to get from the station Como Nord Lago to Stresa (Isola Bella, Madre, Peschatori). There are any buses?
Does it make any sense to go from Como to Stresa or it is better to make the trip around Lago Como only? I have 2days for that so it’s very short time.

Regards,
Kami

The Hotel Britannia organises day tours to Stresa from Cadenabbia, just across from Varenna by the ferry
